Origin and brief history:

The Poodle is one of the most distinctive and well known types of dogs due to their extremely curly and fluffy hair.  These dogs date all the way back to 15th century Germany and France where they were prized as much for their looks as their function.  The original poodle  was bred to be a water dog, and these dogs are known for being excellent swimmers.  These days the Poodle is primarily known for its outward appearance, but the Poodle has a long history of being a working dog and continues to be in many aspects. These dogs are historically known for retrieving hunted game from water, and being used as herding dogs.

The Poodle is considered to be a very playful and loyal dog.  They are also one of the more common breeds that you may see doing tricks at a circus or side show because of their high level of intelligence.  Poodles enjoy learning new tricks and like to please their owner by learning new tasks.  The Poodle is also a very loving dog and enjoys a lot of affection.  If they are not given enough attention it is possible that they will become sad and act out.  They are not aggressive dogs, although they may bark when they are scared.

Poodles are considered to be a hypoallergenic dog.  Many people believe that Poodles do not shed, although they do shed very minimally.  Because of their unique coat, their fur does require some upkeep in order to prevent it from becoming knotted and matted.  The Poodle’s hair can be very dense and curly, and it is not uncommon for show Poodles to get brushed for over 10 hrs per week in order to keep the coat looking it’s best.

Specification of breed:

The Poodle has been bred to be a variety of sizes, but is generally considered to be a small dog.  The Standard Poodle can stand over 15 inches tall and weigh 45-70 pounds, while the Toy Poodle can stand under 9 inches and will typically weigh 6-9 pounds.  The Poodle has a medium sized life span at an average of 12 years.

Buyer Beware:

Because they were bred to be working dogs, the Poodle is a very active and intelligent dog.  They are very lovable, but can be needy for attention and affection.  Poodles that are properly stimulated and trained will be extremely loyal companions.  However, Poodles are also very sensitive dogs and are a high maintenance dog.  They will likely require more time and care than the average dog.
